Barclays Premier League Gameweek 14 results

Due to the fact that there is a game tomorrow I will edit this blog tomorrow/ Tuesday to announce the winner of the predictions. But I am quite impressed with my 5-1 prediction in the City-Norwich game.

Blackburn v Swansea: 4-2
Blackburn secured a vital win thanks to four goals from their striker, Yakubu. The win, their first since their win against Arsenal, eased the pressure off of Steve Kean. The result doesn’t help them out of the relegation zone but will give them a lot of confidence. Yakubu look lively throughout the game and scored his first 20 minutes into the game. Despite equalising through Lita’s header, Swansea found themselves going into the break 2-1 down after another goal from Yakubu. He eventually got his hat-trick 12 minutes after half-time when he reacted first to Samba’s header. Swansea did pull one back but gave away a needless penalty and up stepped, yes you guessed it, Yakubu to finish off a superb victory for Rovers. Swansea should be disappointed in giving away goals from set pieces and going down to 10 men after Allen was sent off for two yellows. His first yellow was for throwing the ball away. Not a bad game but Blackburn need a couple more to be safe.

Newcastle v Chelsea: 0-3
What a game! It looks like me predicting the other team to win works (might try that next week). Firstly let me admit that Luiz should have been sent off and the result might have been different but nevertheless we won 3-0 for the second week in a row. Krul made a superb save from Lampard’s penalty, after Sturridge was brought down but could do nothing to prvent Chelsea’s first. Mata lost his marker from a thrown in and it was a perfect cross for Drogba who scored only his second goal of the season. Newcastle went close with shots from Ba and the Ameobi brothers but fell apart and conceded two late goals from Sturridge and Kalou. Quite a decent result away from home against a side that has been the surprise team in the league. Hopefully it will continue and we can catch up to the Manchester clubs and who knows what will happen (Wishful thinking, I know)

Aston Villa v Manchester United: 0-1
Manchester United knew they had to win going into their evening game at Villa Park, after City’s 5-1 thrashing of Norwich. They did just that but it wasn’t as easy as some might have thought. The only goal of the game came in the 20th minute when Phil Jones slotted in Nani’s cross, to score his first career goal. Not many chances were then produced but there were a lot of injuries to both teams. Hernandez was stretchered off when he went down near the box. It has been reported he is due to be out for 4 weeks after tearing his ankle ligaments. Ouch. Jenas and Given both picked up knocks during the game.
Summed up in 10 words (or less):
Wolves v Sunderland: 2-1 – Sunderland showed how tough O’Neill’s job is going to be

Manchester City v Norwich: 5-1 – 5 different goal scorers for City during an impressive display

QPR v West Brom: 1-1 – Shared points at Loftus Road as Long cancelled Helguson’s opener

Tottenham v Bolton: 3-0 – Tottenham’s 9th win in 10. The statistic keeps on rising!

Wigan v Arsenal: 0-4 – Arsenal show that they are back and send Wigan bottom

Everton v Stoke: 0-1 – Stoke win at Goodison for the first time since 1981

Simply the Best:

Player of the weekend: Yakubu – led Blackburn to a vital victory by scoring four.

Game of the Weekend: Chelsea v Newcastle – Had a lot of talking points, near misses, a penalty, 3 goals and a win for Chelsea

Goal of the Weekend: Mikel Arteta long range strike was pretty good

Stat of the Weekend: Arsenal ended a run of 179 corners without a goal in the premier league when Thomas Vermaelen scored
